Threaded headset washers

I've replaced the 1" headset on a frame and the new headset is a lower profile, meaning there's now an excess of threaded steerer tube compared with before. I don't want to cut the steerer down so I've taken up the difference with three washers between the nuts instead of the normal one. It this OK, i.e. will it still function as a locknut?

yeh, no problem. You did the right thing by not cutting the steerer, which may limit flexibility in future

Before the introduction of ahead stems some pros used to ride with a stack of headset washers so they could get their stems higher for events where there was a lot of climbing. The only one who I can name off hand is Giovanni Battaglin but if you hunt through pictures of the pro pelotons you'll find a few more.
