Raleigh Dyna-Tech Odyssey

To replace my Odyssey imposter from another thread!

I’ve got hold of a frame that is what it says it is this time. Lovely condition and ready for me to transfer the parts off the imposter on to it. I had recently refurbished/cleaned the parts on that bike so should be a fairly easy swap, they aren’t perfect but are very close to what should be on this frame. M737 8 speed hubs for now with the extra click on the thumbies being used - that setup has worked fine on the other bike. Larger bike to smaller I’m hoping even the cables will swap as well.

I think that will be it for my Dyna-Tech buying now unless a 700 road bike frame appears in great condition in the right size. I love the Endeavour too @boy"O"boy but for me financially that’s an impossibility, I like catalogue correct if I’m building/buying a catalogue bike and the kit on those would be ruinous to my bank balance! I doubt there are any complete bikes still waiting to be found now.

Anyway, chucked some wheels/stem/seatpost on to get a quick idea of how it will look before I get off to work.

Your Odyssey looks in great condition! Nice addition to the collection! Was going to add a pic of mine as inspiration but I've already done that in the impostor thread.....and seeing the pics of your Mission and Voyager, you don't need encouraging!!😆😆
Looking forward to seeing pics where they're all lined up together.

As for the Endeavour....yeah, agreement with you. They are turning up more frequently now (think it's 6 at the last count) but finding a complete one would be a challenge.
The cost of sourcing a Campagnolo Centaur groupset/ wheels/ Electa saddle far outweighs what most would consider a strong price for a Dynatech. Probably the reason that the majority of the survivors are either a frame/Fork or a mismatch of parts is that the Campagnolo is far more desirable than the frame it was attached to!
The true cost of restoring mine was definitely for passion. Like Classic Cars, you are very unlikely to recoup the actual cost.

Pulling up a chair for updates.

Cheers.

Well I’ve got some hubs, got the cassette. Spent a happy hour this evening putting new bearings in, front cones/lockrings seized on. Ended up having to wire wheel what looked like some sort of putty out of the threads to be able to undo them.

A set of new decals for both as well as some o-rings for the qr nuts.

Just need to find some Araya RM-17 dark anodised in 32h flavour - anyone got a pair sat on a high shelf or a dark corner waiting for a new home? I do have some Rigida rims the same as on the Mission and Voyager but if I’m going to the trouble of building some wheels will wait a while to see if some come up!

As is often the case I’ve hit a bit of an impasse, a break in proceedings, a stumbling block.

I managed to get a great condition complete front wheel from Scant, RM-17 super hard grey rim with xt m730 hub. Which makes one of the ones above redundant. So I’m now after a single Araya RM-17 super hard in grey like these so I can carry on with the build. Still got the option of using the Rigida rims which are the same colour……….but I’m so close…….

Also, I realised I’m already eating my words from the first post in this thread as a Dyna-Tech Pro road frame came up in my size at the right price!

Bit of an update.

I’ve finished assembling with the bits I’ve got. It probably deserves some better condition parts, all serviceable but not minty which is a shame as the frame is really great condition. A couple of tiny marks on the head tube I’ve touched in but other than that it’s about perfect condition wise after a good polish. Needed one down tube decal as it had peeled but was a bargain from H Lloyd.

Wheels are temporarily m737/m738 hubs on bronze Mavic rims. They look ok but I’m almost there with finding the correct wheels. I’ve got the hubs, cassette and qrs as well as a complete front wheel of m730 hub on Araya RM-17 rim. Just need one more rim like in the photo above and I’m in business!

And the best bit, I managed to reuse all of my XTR cable spares again, needing one less outer than the last incarnation it did a whole bike this time! Think the grey suits this colour frame.

Light a bit crappy but just finished!
