Oops bought another Orange…

enigma

Retro Guru
So Sunday I decided against all common sense to buy another bike, it joins the queue as other bikes are in progress..!
It’s a reissue Clockwork Orange I love it, it’s 20” to the top of the seat tube, but he geometry seems fairly relaxed.. it’s built with nice bits, and under the layer of muck it’s a polish up nicely job I think…

Couple questions for the Orange knowledged…

Is the dia Compe sticker factory as the seller reckons his step dad had it built from a frame… and I hate it’s location and fact there’s only the one on one side…

The saddle is appalling, the guy who had been given it by his aging father in law 18 years ago said it had a racing saddle he chucked as it was awful and put a gel sofa on… cue pulling faces suspecting he lobbed a mint flite… so I usually have Ritchey vector saddles but open to period suggestions on what to look at…

The dia Compe brakes are a first for me, only had shimano so are the pads meant to be small and no grooves for water?
I am minded to fit kool stop eagle pads but I didn’t like the current price of them!

Think that’s the questions for now, I’ve seen the lx Brifters in this nice a Nick sell for what I gave for the bike so a long held ambition without a kings ransom made me a very happy boy. A41A1A62-C8FF-4D16-80C9-8412CCDE893E.jpeg

Oh, and his father law complained of deflection under braking with orange forks, so I’ve the slightly odd looking forks to consider too, think I would like orange forks…?

Look like Diacompe 987, a nice canti and a popular upgrade - particularly as they did red/blue ano back when that was the thing to have. If built as a frame then I can understand the choice.

Not used as OE spec as far as I know, and as such the sticker wouldn't be original.

Not sure they would be functionally any better than 561 LX cantis, which are likely what it would have had as a complete bike.

Nice.

Remove sticker
Change pads (can get v style ones with pad inserts if desired)
See how the forks handles, could be a grabby brake rather than fork?

Enjoy
I looked at post fit v style as I like cartridge pads, in theory greater pad surface… have you done this swap and found it works well?

Nice project is that, late 92, early 93 frame and last of the Tange tubed bikes. Orange regularly fitted Dia-Compe at the time, you could chose them as an option but the decal would have been added later IMO. The saddle fitted could well have been an Orange branded Velo and there's plenty about so should be easy enough to find, especially as the build looks like 93/4 which opens your options up a bit as Orange changed their standard saddle around then to one that lasts longer so isn't rare now.

Not sure what I'd do with the fork as you'll struggle to find an original in that colour and length as although the frame is a proper size, there are not many about. I know after squeezing on to 19 inch frames for years due to lack os 21's! Maybe get some Pace RC35's?

Thankyou , will look at velo, I have pace forks but only in ahead, I may switch out to these as they are like new.. but no lockout.
I will rebuild it and ride it first to form an opinion.
But I guessed it may be a pain to get original forks. I did come across the Planet X rigid forks currently on sale, the crown is built similar and I am tempted but the dropouts on those are naff looking…

Blimey you’d have to be doing something a bit weird to get the F2 forks to flex - I assume they were the fitment.…

Dia Compe sticker aftermarket. Take it off.

Lovely thing.
