MTB to tourer

Re:

Nice frame. Ideally, I would have gone for something cheaper. Very thin walled tubing can pick up dents.

The best bike I had, and certainly the one I did most touring miles on, was a 1987 Peugeot Alpine. Plain guage cromoly. Looked dreadful, steered like a tank, and in its later years I had to tighten the headset every ride as it all became ovalised. I loved that bike.

Some bastard scrap man stole it.

Re:

To add my bit..
Agree with most of what has been said so far. I have done hundreds of miles touring on my 1994 Kilauea. Mainly round the Highlands of Scotland.
Mine has been lightweight touring (no tent) and a 32 spoke rear wheel has been fine. Don't use cheap wheels cos you get what you pay for.
Give the bike a good service before you set off. Typically I replace cables at the start of the summer and have never had a problem while away.
Tyres- 1.5 inch quality slick tyres work for me.
Personally, I like to do say 40-50 miles a day, gives time to explore a little on the way, but get to destination in time to have a look around and find a decent pub.
Remember to have fun!
