Mercian 531 MTB

Re:

Spoke to Kevin this morning and he thinks it is very early and based on a road frame and forks going by the clearances
531 off road tubeset but built like a roadie

The were kind of ALL built 'roadie' style back then because there weren't a lot of tube sets available and more importantly, even less lugs & drop-outs to chose from - unless you manufactured your own.

I have a similar era MTB which is actually built from road tubing and a just as competent builder as anyone from Mercian (they even share some of the styling ques) but because its not a fashionable name, its worth about 50p.

Heres how you did 'custom' in the UK in 1986!

Some, a well known 'some' were a bit ahead of their time

'road' tubing on an MTB? Silly sods..

Danson67's very early Pioneer shares a bit with the ole' Mercian (especially the fork crown) but differs wildly on the approach to handling

And heres how you did bog standard in 1987 with some awkward consiquences:

Too steep a head angle lead to twitchy steering with the seat tube way to slack - this bike was wrong from the start

That's my bike! It is indeed early. Was built in 1984 for a chap in Dundee. It's built with 531 All Terrain tubing and has the widest fork crown you've ever seen! It's not really based on a road or touring frame but it's really early in the mountain bike's evolution so geometry is a bit cookie just like the very first Stumpjumpers which appeared for the first time in Britain in 83/84 too.

The Shimano Deer Head stuff's all date coded 1983, the Mercian transfers are still on the rims etc. It is indeed a lovely thing!
