Never had any problems with Evans myself, but have never tried to buy "specialist" items from there.

If you need bearings, don't bother with cycle stores online or anywhere else, go to an online bearing seller, just google for them.

I bought bearings for both front and back hubs, grade 10 hardened steel, 50 in a pack, for bugger all!

For Mavic 501 or Sachs cartridge bearings, RS (yup, the electronics people) have been a good bet in the past. Incidentally if anyone knows of a good source of spare Stronglight/
Miche conical roller bearing races for A9, Primato, etc. headsets, I'm all ears (but not in the Lineker sense).

You can find bearing sales in just about every moderate sized industrial zone.

That is not the issue really, it is the fact sellers are unable to provide basic after sales support on their products.

Since joining a more reasonable employer (no tracker in my car!), I have visited quite a number of 'Cycle Stores'; Evans, Tredz, Cycle Surgery et al. As far as I can see, they are all the same, right down to the merchandising displays, which is why I have failed to buy anything more than a drinks bottle, or bar tape from any of them.

My LBS is great, and so I use them for a lot of my parts / kit. I also use Halfords from time to time, as they have all sorts of bits'n'bobs, including ball bearings, in packets on display.

All of that said, I think that stocking a cycle shop must be a nightmare and I have visited some small independent stores with good reputations that have not had what I wanted, and that includes my LBS.

Evans is no different to Tescos, which is fine if that's what you want. I'm more fond of my local bike shop me...
