GT Xizang Serial number thread

Well, about time I jumped in!

I got it off a guy in 1995 who busted his arm racing, oops :) good for me!
1992 (possibly 1991?)
18" Frame

SN / MADE IN USA Stamping - G18166 Made in USA stamping.
Seat Tube Insert/Shim - Nope
Head Tube Shape - flared/larger at top and bottom.
Rear Brake Hanger - none (has U Brake)
Rear Dropouts - Plain
Cable Routing - external routing, typical one sided barrels, has a neat little elbow tube under top tube where the seatstays meet for the u-brake cable.
Stickers - Yellow "Xizang LE titanium" on down tube, black outlined yellow "alterra GT" stickers on top tube/headset, 99% sure they're original, but not in great shape. ive been pulling off the alterra ones for a while now when I get bored waiting for a friend to ride. the rest are in ok shape, REALLY want new/fresh ones. that yellow just pops on the brushed ti!

love the bike, will never sell it. this will prob make some cringe here...but...I've been slowly converting it into a somewhat killer retro/new ride. Putting on a carbon white bros rock solid front fork, chris king HS of course black on black. thomson X4 stem (black), titec pluto riser bar, SUPER wide, just had a stans arch hoop built on a white industries ENO Disc hub (all black) yes, I said Disc... The frame is going to James at Blacksheep in Ft. Collins, CO for disc tabs and some reinforcements welded on. I wont cut off the u brake bosses though. I know I know, but while the U brake is ok, its heavy as hell and nothing feels better than my avid ultimates. thomson masterpiece seatpost with thomson binder, all black, raceface single ring 34t crankset (will replace one day with a better one), white ind. DOS 16/18 rear cassette, so yes, its a single speed! :)
And.... my front wheel is a 29er, so the bike is a 69er singlespeed blacked out other than the frame. but, it rides like a drrream, im faster on it than on my epic unless its very very rough. I'll post pics soon, but she's a work in progress now, hope to have it 100% done within the month. hoping it will come in around 21lbs.

I dont think the SSNs are for qtys made for each size for each year. I think they're for total production. remember, these were big bucks back in the day when there wasnt a huge market for super high end frames. I know two other guys in my area that have them and still ride them (what are the chances...) I'll see if I can find out their SSNs to help piece together the puzzle.

these bikes are sweet! and grrreat to ride. enjoy!!

Mine
22) G16020 - 16" - 92 with yellow decals - Ubrake mounts - externally machined headtube - the top 4 inches of the seattube has a greater wall thickness than the rest of the tube. The seattube tube must have been drilled, bored or reamed from the bottom bracket end to reduce weight. Takes a 27.4 seatpost but came shimmed for 26.4mm post.
