Having popped in to Ribble Cycles and seen their HT 725, and quite like the look of it, what are some other brands that make decent steel chromo MTB bikes? As I only see hydroformed alu bikes everywhere.

Surly are great but their handlebars weigh near a KG, so they are aren't weight wieners.
I do love their trailers and the bikes are indestructible.
Too bad they are so expensive, with all their stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd seen Surly before but wasn't that impressed by them, but the Cotic's look good (and expensive).

If money is no object there's of course Crust and Velo Orange, but their MTB stuff is perhaps more bikepacking oriented.

I like the idea of having a custom made frame by Marino, it's incredibly cheap for a base frame

I like my Surly's but yeah they're nothing 'special'. Just decent made frames designed for versatility which is something I can appreciate. They overlap a fair few riding cultures. I think their stuff is too expensive as well.
