front ring for a 1x9?

if i were to build a 1x9, could i use a standard middle ring or would i need something unramped? my plan was to use the standard ring from my crank & replace the outer with a bash. any thoughts?

you can use a standard ring no probs, but get better engagement from an un ramped one.

Yeah as above really, and for bling factore. I have been running e thirteen g rings and the things seem to go on and on and on. Also got a middleburn one which has trouble fitting some cranks.

cheers folks, the build won't be done until next year anyway, i'm just magpie-ing all the bits i need over the next few months to keep the cost down!
