Free hub removal advice

Hi . I am after some help / advice . I have a slipping rear hub on my GT Talera . I’ve watched YouTube and managed to remove the rear cassette but can’t undo the hub. I’ve tried RJ The bike guys way but the Allen key doesn’t locate onto anything. What am I doing wrong 🙁

I’m also going to replace the ball bearings while it’s apart , does anyone know what size they are ? 👌

No luck with this method? Is it a 10mm hex you are using?

🤔 did you use the long bit? 😳

Sometimes the freehub body stops the hex from reaching far enough in to bite. When doing this a vice is very handy indeed. Clamp the short edge and use the handle side on the inside freehub and you should feel it engage (don’t use a ball end hex though)

Someone will confirm but I think rear hubs are 8 or 9 x 1/4” bearings (in each side) but best way is to compare because of cycling and it’s derision of sticking to international standards.

I did try with the handle end .I will have another go tomorrow . 👍🏻

Got it off . I had to put the tool
In from the other side to undo it . Need to get a new one now . It’s very rusty so I think it’s better to replace it

Good effort Nev! Now to find a new one which may be trickier than getting the flipping thing off 🤓

I just noticed your profile pic, looks like serious stuff!

I had a look online but couldn’t work out which one to buy so watched some YouTube vids on how to clean it . I have sprayed wd40 in it to clean it through and then poured some 5w30 engine oil in to and it which was the only lubricant I had about and it seems to be working fine .👌

It’s a picture of my CT scan. I came off my BMX at the local skate bowl 2 months ago . I fell around 15 foot onto my head (no helmet) and broke by skull and had a bleed on the brain so had to have my skull opened to fix the bleed . Scary stuff . BMX has been sold so this is a new way of having fun on a bike .
