Re: Frame of Mystery...

Hopefully stripping some of the paint will give some clues. I spent ages trying to work out what it was and was tempted to bid on it just for the forks.

Re:

Could you not just email Bob Jackson and ask them what it was before the painted it?

Possibly, Maybe a long time ago. Seller "seemed" genuine, said he'd had it ages and has never got around to stripping it back and doing anything with it.
I made an offer, it was declined, the seller suggested I just bid, so I did, and 99p later here we are

I've just noticed what looked like a sticker under the paint on the seat tube, so I scraped the paint off...

Which leads to this bike shop (maybe purchased from there or serviced there?)...

https://www.offrampbikes.com

Now I'm assuming this frame is early/mid-90's based on:

1. Cantilever brake cable stops/routing
2. Cable stops at top of down tube.
3. Cup & cone Bottom bracket
4. Threaded Headset.

Some of the above are still found on modern BSO's though.
The lack of a replaceable mech hanger makes me think its either an old/early aluminium frame, or just a low-end frame.

The forks I think are made of steel.

There's some grey paint in the BB area which I think is original, and it looks like there's a fade to black for the rear triangle.

Intriguing....

Re:

What's the best way of removing the paint that's been added to the frame without also removing the original paint underneath?

I'd give nail polish remover a go. Stick some on a rag and wipe.
