1992 Ibis Mojo

Proto2000

Retro Guru
Well this one is a mystery. Bought it as advertised as a 98 but after getting it, it's a 92 or very early 93. Has the Hand Job but is different from my 94 and strangest part is it's a 1" headtube. The seller said she worked for a bicycle magazine then and was owed money so this was payment to her. I have stripped it down to frame and see absolutely no rust so as she said, always stored indoors. I think all of the Deore parts are original , paint is for sure. Decals have been removed from down tube based on someone trying to "touch up" the paint. Stem is the alluring piece, seems a fillet brazed one off or a crude welded n filed. Once stripped I will see.

First year Mojo. Although it has the hand job... and first year Mojos didn´t. Could have been repainted and hand job added later. Very short head tube as well. Left my Ibis in another country and i am itching for another Mojo.

I have seen a few with a 1" headtube so I'm thinking it is a late year frame before the 1 1/8" came out and they sold off all of the older frames with a hand job to encourage people to buy them. The evidence that it is a Bold Gold original color is in the frame and stem...someone obviously resprayed the stem black and tried to make it look like a fillet brazed one by grinding the welds. I will continue what they started since it's a hack now, hopefully using body filler to get the result will improve on what they did. I did a test fit with a Bonty "one piece" stem but not sure 19 1/2" wide bars are my liking.

Head tube to seat tube C-C is 22" and BB to top tube C-C is 17". Chain stays are 16" C of drop out to back of BB shell. Seat post is 29.4mm. Started to clean the components and they look good enough for the built so keeping everything except maybe the stem, bars and pedals. Freehub is a bit loose so need to work that out, a bit noisy now so hoping grease and snug will quiet it down.

A 17in Mojo in 1995 would have a significantly longer top tube and head tube. Interesting. I like the old school geo though.
That´s a good platform for a drop bar build.

I did a few measurements and the 2 bikes share the same numbers all around except for the head tube. Orange newer Mojo is 4.25" and older Bold is 3.3125" so almost an inch different. For a comparison I have them side by side and shimmed the front of the Bold one to match the lower part of the head tubes and the differences are seen between the two.

Do they feel the same size?
