Dawes Galaxy

Just picked this up. I'm guessing 1981 entry level Galaxy. Replacement back wheel and saddle but everything else is there. I've always had a thing for Dawes ever since a school mate rolled up on one. Made my gas pipe 5 Speed Raleigh look very low rent.
Only paid £25 for this but it needs a lot of love. My worst fear has been confirmed, the seat post appears to be stuck. Last time I ended up using the Caustic Soda trick want to avoid that this time. Debating whether to do a full resto or rat bike. Anywords of wisdom appreciated.
Very unique, a colour coordinated chain and cassette 😂

Started the re-assembly today. Also had a go at lug lining with questionable results.

Good work. I've done 3 or 4 seat post removals and getting more 'pro' each time. Cling film helps to protect the frame from paint damage I've found.

Good luck with the rebuild 😊

Replaced the plastic cable clips with stainless steel ones, tan wall tyre to replace the black wall. Took it to a qualified bike mechanic to get it checked because I suspected the rear derailleur hanger was bent and I couldn't get it to shift properly. He had the Park Tool which confirmed it was and he was able to straighten it. Took it for a test ride. First time riding drop bars and down tube shifters for 40 years! Not sure at the moment but I guess I'll get use to them. I think I can now safely say it's finished.

Went out on the Galaxy yesterday, wasn't sure about it after a short 5 minutes test ride before and thought I'd have to sell it. My fears were unfounded, it rides superbly. Light and responsive, the non indexed gears changed smoothly.
Yes it is a tad too big, but because of my body to leg ratio (Neanderthal/Ape) it felt comfortable and not stretched out. I'm going to change the bar tape for something a bit more plush, but apart from that really happy with it.

Dude, is that the old Shorts Flying Boat Factory on the far side of the water in the 3rd picture?
Don't know, this is from Hamble looking at Warsash in Hampshire. I do know Short Sunderlands were based at Calshot just over Southampton water during the war.
