The top tube is usually measured centre to centre from the seat tube, along the top tube to the head tube (the bit that the forks fit into from underneath and the stem fits into from the top), so not quite as far as the handle bars.
Sounds like you have a job on your hands. I helped my Father in Law empty the workshop that had belonged to one of his friends. The chap was a retired electronics engineer and keen model engineer and the workshop was relatively tidy (for a workshop) but packed front to back and top to bottom with 50 years worth of accumulated 'useful' stuff.
