Re:

Got a few things done on the stumpy over the weekend. Cleaned all the bottom bracket threads with a wire brush and white spirits (Smirnoff blue works best :) ) to get the years of grime out and they were spot on,so in went the. Deore XT bottom bracket.
Next up was the cleaning to see what i had to work with, first up was to get those plastic frame protectors off which were over the decals without ripping them. Surprisanly they were easy to remove Specialized must of clear coated the frame after putting them on,so it's just a case of getting the remaining glue removed.
After that the frame and forks was rubbed down with the trusty Morrison's cream cleaner and giving a good wash to get the grime out.
Overall i'm happy with the outcome, there's bits of surface rust to remove and bits of paint damage but nothing to be worried about,it can easily be touched in. Those S stickers on the seatube and chainstays are coming off aswell, there not original to the bike.
When that's done it'll be time to get polishing it to reveal that lovely pearl flip effect the paint has :D
Other things i like about the stumpy is it still has the bike shop sticker on it from where it was bought new and the original owner had there postcode put on the BB shell.
The serial number for it is 89L2979 so i guess that must mean Specialized built it in 1989 for release in 1990.

Is that who they are now? The only one still going from round my way is Steels.

I love it when bikes still have there original shop stickers on,it gives it a bit of history.
I had a 1992 Lavadome a while back and it had the original shop sticker still on it from Canada, somehow it made its way all the way to the north east :)

Re:

When did Hardistys go then? I still remember their TV adverts!

I spoke to Pete Darke at Darke cycles in Sunderland the other day ..they're still alive and going strong :D

Re:

Hardistys was taking over by the Edinburgh bicycle group in early 2000 and Dentons has been no more for a long time now aswell.

Re:

The postman has been with the nice shiny new Turbo saddle which was what the bike originally came specced with and saying the bike has everything Deore XT i might aswell put a Deore XT seatpost on it :D

Re:

The frame has now had a few coats of polish and now when your close up in the sun you can see the sparkle and the tinge of pearl come out depending on how you look at it. Also i've decided to leave it as is with it's minimal battle scars i just like the look of it that way, only thing i'm going to touch up though is the yellowing on the right seatstay where a clamp must of been.

The turbo saddle arrived today so i've tried the XT seatpost with it to see what it looks like,i'm happy :D
The chrome on the original specialized quick release seatclamp was well passed it's sell by date so i've giving it a lick of black paint,it should go well with all the rest of the black XT parts.

Next up respray the stem and maybe the bars and touch up the headset and that'll be that sorted.
