I personally cannot see any problem with 1x9,2x9,3x9, or even 4x9 is you were lucky[or unlucky] enough to get one of those cheap old 4 ring chainsets.
Really justg down to the capacity on the front mech
Im using a 2x9 set up with 46T outer and 36t inner with a standard 3 speed sram X9 mech but with the limiting screws set to only allow for a 2 shift.The X9 shifter is also a 3 speed but with the front mech set only to shift to 2 then thats what the shifter does also.
My set up just makes it as the front mech as really designed for a compact 44T max so to run it with non compact rings made for A LOT of fiddling with the positioning.as it is it only just makes the shift without catching on either ring
