Here we go again one rebuild finished sat twiddling my thumbs. Thinking about another project now the Raleigh Competition GS has been passed on to my son on his birthday. The very same day I chatted to an elderly neighbour and told her about the fun rebuilding the GS and she asked if I would like to have a look at her husbands old bike, been in garage for 35 years and was bought new in 1984 and not ridden very much. Sadly her husband is no longer in a position to ride it.

Result I now have another new project........Watch this space..,,

Thanks RabC..... It is in great condition for its age, been garage stored and not used for many years. Tyres perished, slight marks on handlebars due to another bike leaning against it. It has a small tear on seat and the stem was stuck, but now removed. I intend to completely strip, deep clean and polish all parts, renew all bearings, cables, blocks etc then cut and polish the frame to get back that lustre it has lost from being so long in a dark garage. It is my intention to keep this as a fine example of its type. It will be my VR ride next year.
 
Been working on the bike today. Ordered the Helicomatic lockring removal tool yesterday, but impatience got the better of me and I called in to my local bike shop to see if I could borrow their tool. After a lot of digging they found one, but said they had not used it for many years. The ring came off real easy and the freewheel then just lifts off the spline no unthreading. I believe these removal tools were once given away with every bike with this type of hub. They certainly make removing the freewheel so easy if you can get hold of the tool that is. So If you have one dig it out and put it on the internet, they are going for silly prices for what was once a freebie and most seem to be coming from America.

Talking of Helicomatic hubs does anyone know if there is such a thing as an adapter allowing you to use a 'normal' freewheel. I would like to replace the one I have with a gold anodised one, or if anyone has an original Maillard Helicomatic Gold 14/24T as mentioned in the 84 catalogue then please pm me.

Also can anyone tell me anything about this shimano rear mech 'shown below', its not one I know anything about. Thanks

Thanks for this. Now I can see why it was used on this bike being called Shimano Golden Arrow
 
After many years of none use the crank arms finally came off. The bottom bracket cups needed a good clean, the old grease had actually solidified and needed two hours in the degreaser to shift it. I'm very pleased the cups are pristine no pits, even the caged bearings show no wear, but are being replaced anyway. I've already replaced the 2x13x5/32" balls on rear hub and 2x10x3/16" on front hub. Repacking the BB tomorrow then replacing the cranks. Next job the headset bearings.

Incidentally
This bike does not have suicide brakes as described in some other threads for this model and year, and the catalogue I have seen for 1984 does not show them either. Anyone more knowledgeable than me know if they last listed them on 1983 models?

Definitely another nice Raleigh to be restoring.
Things seem to be cleaning up really well and the gold is looking great underneath. Quite often I have seen these and it all looks faded or bleached out as though its been stored in the sun or something but this looks nice.
Following along for sure.
