CBT Italia build - thoughts and advice on components

Old School Hero
Hi all,

After 18 months of searching for the dream frame, I've picked up this CBT Italia with Columbus SLX off ebay after some hard haggling with the seller. It was built in 1990 and has never been built up since coming off the production line.

Originally I'd thought to build with entirely new components but I'm now thinking about something period (mainly as I'm hankering for some delta or athena brakes).

Any thoughts on sticking new parts on old steel frames? Any issues I should watch out for? I've never done a build so I'm pretty clueless where to start.

I'm also stuck for good online resources to look at full groupsets - there's so many variations I can't anywhere reliable to look at the full sets so I can find one I want. A lot of modern sets seem to come in black and I'm looking for something in silver.

Advice/comments/thoughts all welcome! Progress will probably be slow but will post updates here.

Re:

Can you get ergo levers on C record stuff? I'd quite like them on the groupset I pick up - and any thoughts on where I can find a good website showing different groupsets?

If you wish to go modern then Campagnolo Athena 11 speed in polished silver would look good on this frame.

Re:

IMHO Polished silver is a bit boring :)

Black-red centaur would be an incredibly nice addition. But it's YOUR frame&decision, I'm just dropping in my two cents :)

Good Luck with the Build

That's a relatively rare frame I would definitely go for period correct Campagnolo parts.

Very nice, I have a 80's CBT made with crimped Oria tubing. As I understand it the CBT factory was near the French border and frames made for the French market were French threaded. Mine has a French threaded bottom bracket, a big surprise when I went to replace the bottom bracket. The workmanship is very nice and the chrome on mine still looks very good after 30 years. Your frame is beautiful, do it justice and go with Campy super Record. Is CBT still producing frames?

Re:

they've still got a website and it appears they're still putting bikes out. I've never seen anything like this one which is why I had to have it!

I think I've pretty much set on a period campagnolo build, starting with some monoplaner brakes hopefully from someone on this forum.

Any thoughts on handlebars for this build and wheels? I've got a good idea on other components but not sure where to start on these areas.

So a quick update on this build, which is progressing nicely (altough nothing much built as yet. lots of parts collected)

Here is the frame hanging on the wall
