So who was this Zinn fella? I believe that Zinn cycles were short lived. If Zinn was 753 certified, where did he learn his craft, and where did he go post Zinn? Is he anything to do with this outfit?

Nothing to do with those Zinn bikes I'm afraid.

These Zinns were part of Whiteburner products in the West Midlands. There was one guy on here you used to make the frames, I think he's called Andy.

If I recall rightly they only made the bikes from 91 to about 93, but I'm sure somebody will correct me or confirm that.

I also think Whiteburner are still going.

The builders name is Mr Andy Thompson. He was contracted to design and build Zinn Z-753s for WhiteBurner Products in Smethwick.

Sadly he was only there for several months before going off and doing his own thing with custom frames.

Hence why there are so few actual Z-753s.

He does post here from time to time.... 8)

I think the link above is for the American chap, Whos Name is Lennard Zinn, who does a good job in specialising in custom built frames and frames for Larger riders. No relation the the Uk brand from BITD.

Skipping the waffle, it'll be intriguing to see what this goes for, there does seem to be a little bit of hype attached to Zinns that manifests itself in proportionally higher prices than similar specced/era/rarity bikes. It could be the impact of the race team at the time, or the fact that they reviewed well and were hyped in the press, but, in my oh so humble opinion they are no better (in terms of 'design', tubing spec, quality of join and quality of finish) than a Roberts, Lloyd or Fuquay of the same period, yet command a higher price.

Agreed, and yet they still command less money than a similary HYPED and specd tig welded, American offering...Ala Fat Chance etc. (just to name one).

It always came down to the Marketing boys in the end, and whether or not they were able to capture the hearts and minds of the consumer. (IMHO)

but then this hasnt changed in 20 years, it is refreshing though, for British Steel bike to be the topic for a change.

hell, it could have been a klein....(again)....

amen to that, plenty of waffle going on in this thread.

When a Zinn hits eBay there's always a 10 page masturbation thread (as per this one), that doesn't happen when even the rarest Klein does (or anything else).

As to whether this stuff is worth £1k+, for that you can have Yates or Roberts build you a custom fillet brazed 853 frame to your own spec. Now that's putting your money where your mouth is and supporting British manufacture, not just waffling about former glories online.

I think its more to do with the rarity, not just what its made out of. There were not many Zinn bikes made, very few of them 753's so that will add to the appeal. I could easily go to Yates and get a new bike made but I wouldn't be able to get an original 753 with full Campag groupset, that was made in the UK – thats why I like them. I've had one for about 20 years and its still the best bike I've ever owned.

Are you, as a fervent detractor, better or worse than the rest then, your contrary comments are adding to the page count?

I don't mind the hype, as my Zinn is apparently climbing in value with every new auction.

You really ought to do your homework before waffling on yourself Einstein...!!! (Im pretty confident it was your uneducated NONSENSE that started the ball rolling...........PMSL)

If you can buy a "Top Spec" current model handbuilt fillet brazed 853 "BIKE" from Roberts or Yates for a Grand, ill take the build slot after yours if thats OK.

And please dont preach about supporting British Manufacturing by buying Modern current models, when you dont know whats in a mans stable.

you are just making yourself look more ridiculous....

carry on.
