i think people like the gt as it symbolises an era when lycra and horrendous colours (this one in particular) sort of a moment when mtbs crosswd into mainstream awareness ....sort of iconic i guess....

I think a lot of it has to do with how deep you were into the sport in the Retro era (say early 90s) my knowledge of bike companies didnt go past the obvious big brands + Fat, Merlin etc basically anything that was in MBUK, I lusted after Stumjumpers/ Explosifs as they were just out of my price range-
If you were already on a Stumpy I guess you lusted after a Merlin and if you were on a Merlin etc etc.

Does this make sense?

Sorry to be presumptious but Ameybrook I guess you were in the sport deep back then? there are others who use the site who I would categorize next to you- you want the serious high end rare as stuff as you've had everything else when it was new!

You are right my theory on why people like low end bikes doesnt make much sense.

We all like different bikes- and we are all entitled to our opinion. I wasnt trying to antagonise you I was doing a poor job of explaining why there has to be room for all types of retro bikes on this site. And why a low end GT is as valid on this site as a Fat Chance.

Personally I find the hegemony of blue anno'd Fat Chances boring!

&you missed the letter C off the front of Cranks. I was pointing this out in a way that may possibly be construed by some as funny. ie purple compact cranks are rare, but purple compact ranks are so scarce as to be non-existent. I now realise that pointing out a typo is not fanny at all.

Always find these mtbr vrc vs retrobike debates quite interesting.

Think there is more crossover (both bike and member wise) than a lot of people imagine. Sure mtbr vrc is perhaps more focused (as one would imagine with it being a sub forum of mtbr) and retrobike is more inclusive and does tend to wander away from the traditional deifnitions of vintage/retro/classic on occasion. At the end of the day there are some cracking bikes on both

Missed all of this thread till tonight (misleading title I guess...) - now I think I'm in a two year time warp...!

On a different tack to the above - maybe one day I'll log in to the very worthy MTBR VRC and clock the natives talking about imported RC100s; discussions on the merits of Overbury's versus Chas Roberts framebuilding; interviews with Geoff Apps and Tim Gould; or just maybe something on Killeen's ride to seventh at the Olympics....

Very interesting conversation.

It just goes to show that there is room enough on the internet for both of these forums to thrive and grow.

I see a lot of V-brake discussion and the one about triple clamp forks...just not my focus. Nothing V,R, or C about any of that.

While its no secret my attitudes towards this stuff, listen to Ameybrook...he knows his stuff and is an excellent balance of the two forums.

Hey...I just mentioned you above...true statement.
Without being a long time reader of the VRC mtbr archives, I would be lost about a bunch of things...it's just some of the other stuff I could do without.

A lot of good info and knowledgeable people there...as well as strong opinions and endless debates. If you don't have tough skin or like rolling with the punches, the VRC can seem unforgiving.

Pull anyone there aside for a one on one discussion or question and you'll find that we're all very friendly helpful people.

I'm a longitme member on some rough forums with even rougher off-topic /no rules sub-forums (sherdog and honda-tech), so e-fighting is not a problem...
I'll probably join up as some point, if for nothing else, to just say Thanks

If you're NYC, talk to Bushpig and Fatmikeynyc.

I'll be sure to look them up on the VRC...they sell some cool stuff on ebay as well.
