Very interesting conversation.

It just goes to show that there is room enough on the internet for both of these forums to thrive and grow.

I see a lot of V-brake discussion and the one about triple clamp forks...just not my focus. Nothing V,R, or C about any of that.

While its no secret my attitudes towards this stuff, listen to Ameybrook...he knows his stuff and is an excellent balance of the two forums.

Without being a long time reader of the VRC mtbr archives, I would be lost about a bunch of things...it's just some of the other stuff I could do without.

A lot of good info and knowledgeable people there...as well as strong opinions and endless debates. If you don't have tough skin or like rolling with the punches, the VRC can seem unforgiving.

Pull anyone there aside for a one on one discussion or question and you'll find that we're all very friendly helpful people.

I know that each of my builds has taken longer than the last and who knows when my Ultimate will get built?

I'm too new to be old school here, but I've been around enough to see things get stale.

I often log on myself hoping that somebody from MTBR VRC will have posted something different/interesting overnight.....

On the subject of the other forum, I lurk frequently and occasionally post. I've always found most of the guys friendly and helpful. I've traded with lots of them on ebay. They enjoy a bit of banter and aren't a bad bunch really if you excuse them for being American

Oh, and back on topic, nice Karakoram. I sold loads of those at Pedal Power in the early 90s.

I don't care if its top end or low rent, blinged to the nines, factory stock or just hacked and enjoyed. to me its all about the memories they evoke- be it the cheap stuff your pals thrashed about the fields and streets or hammered through the woods to the exotica that we pressed our noses against shop windows on wet Saturday afternoons with a few quids pocket money in your hand, the bikes we tore pages out of magazines of and taped them to the shed wall in the hope of seeing one in the flesh never mind owning one day. They are all special- Raleigh Mustang to Tomac rep IMO.
They are bikes- just bikes... lets just enjoy them for what they are!

If slating bikes means that people feel they cannot share their bikes with us (as clockworkgaz said) I cannot see it being a positive thing to do.

Ps. I think being polite and not slagging of someones bike is just a funny English manners thing.

I'm a longitme member on some rough forums with even rougher off-topic /no rules sub-forums (sherdog and honda-tech), so e-fighting is not a problem...

I like to blame all the blue collar bikes, though I know thats not what you mean.

the thing i like about this forum in particular is that everybody on it appears to enjoy cycling as a whole and everything that the cycling world entails. From jez' super bikes to the beautiful simplistic builds that guybe has been producing without going ano bling tastic. I personally dont get excited about standard nos middle of the road bikes, unless it has history ie my lavadome is exactly the same one i rolled out of the showroom 18 years back. I tried a similar nos 1992 cindercone it just didnt do anything for me ( iagree with the where the challenge in it point mike made!). I think what im missing here is the point of the last 4 pages Mike was enquiring as to why people get excited about the GT didnt seem like he was slagging anyone off or their bikes or did i miss something??

Always find these mtbr vrc vs retrobike debates quite interesting.

Think there is more crossover (both bike and member wise) than a lot of people imagine. Sure mtbr vrc is perhaps more focused (as one would imagine with it being a sub forum of mtbr) and retrobike is more inclusive and does tend to wander away from the traditional deifnitions of vintage/retro/classic on occasion. At the end of the day there are some cracking bikes on both
