You Know You Bought a Good One When...

I know why you built that Kona. But it doesn't stop it basically being an extremely common, mass-produced one (albeit in a rather nice new outfit :) )

I am going to say this: IMO there needs to be more criticism on this site. Not mean, but constructive.

To an extent, I agree. Way too much non-Retro (in fact just plain modern) stuff gets posted which i feel dilutes the site. But, an absolute mint example, even of a low-spec model, deserves an airing surely - especially if people like it?

We'd all love to see new and exciting rare beauties all day, but there aren't enough out there to make it worth logging in everyday.

Where's the harm in padding things out with a few less prestigious examples?

I fail to see where you can criticise a genuinly retro bike such as this GT; except of course if you simply believe it's not good enough? I gather this is a bit of a refugee camp from that sort of attitude which prevails on another forum? :)

I'm not sure I would be very comfortable making disparaging comments about someone's bike choice. I don't think I would like someone slating my machines so I choose not to do it to anyone else.

I have seen plenty of bikes on here (both expensive and low end) which are just not my cup of tea, but I just don't post my opinion- what is the point anyway?

If this means we end up with a lot of positive comments for all bikes, is that really that bad?

Wise man once said...."Let the refining and improving of your own life keep you so busy that you have little time to criticize others."

Total call out. And I like it.

I'm always torn between MTBR and Retrobike. I like RB because the bikes match the period from which I came (mid 90s as opposed to late 80s). The people here are friendly and receptive of all its members. I like MTBR because the folks there, like me, take this stuff serious. They are willing to devote time and money to their craft. But in all fareness, they can be d!cks to new members.

I'm not sure I want to make this into a cross forum debate. Things need to get shaken up from time to time, so I'm going to say stuff like Karakorams are crappy bikes. I'm not trying to be mean to anyone... its an Internet forum... its supposed to draw debate and criticims. If everyone high-fived each other all the time over crappy bikes, then we wouldn't have much to talk about.

In the end... if it makes you happy, it cant be that bad.

I agree.

Its far nicer to say nothing, than hurt someones feelings.

Reminds me of that comment made on a GT Outpost. Difference is, this one genuinely made me smile!

MTBR/VRC and RetroBike are worlds apart in how they approach the same subject, I can understand people flitting between the two and I can understand some people from VRC (not you Ameybrook) being of the opinion that we don't 'do it right' over here.

Personally I like the attention to detail and period correctness of VRC (but they ripped me when I joined so I don't go there anymore   ) AND I like the community spirit this place has....

Ummmm....did I actually make a point here?

That would be my GT outpost, but i have all sorts from the outpost to the American built RTS frame that had never been built until early this year, so new, it still has the sticker of the guy who welded it on it, back from '94. the outpost was my first mtb, and only earning £8/week paperround, my parents only gave me £100 quid towards it, so the other £150 seem to take an age to save up for.

I don't care much for MTB snobs- it kinda goes against the attitude in which mountain bikes came into being: Thumbing their nose against the roady elitest.

MTB Elitest is a type of oxymoron that Roadies would laugh at- I'm sure.

MTB/VRC snobs are the reason I won't join the VRC forum over on MTB, though I do read their archived threads often, and have learned much. Eric (rumpfy) has been cool the few times I've spoken with him over email due to ebay transactions, and I'm sure there are more cool people than snobs...but I rather not deal.

Retrobike is just fine with me, and I hope it doesn't become more snobbish.

Old bikes are cool whether they were cheap or not...and like stated above, I just won't comment, (much), on bikes I don't care for. The threads then fall down off the first page, and it becomes a comment unto itself.

i just like to build up bikes, regardless of what they are, its nice to see a pile of bits form into some useable, (thats also why i like building computers)

i think that the bike that was just outside your price range is always going ot be more special to you than the high end ones that are know known for their frames cracking
