...

Thats exactly what I was thinking. I only realized there were 2 versions when doing the work for this post. Then looked at the numbers closely. Would one be m901 or m910? But no. Both are labelled m900. And I know there is two versions of rear derailleurs, the secon version is labeled rd-m910.
And then I thought the reason might be that they did not want to change the molds for the brake lever, as that did not change. I heard it is very exmensive to do.

Re:

Remember though that M900 was around from late 1991 until 1994/5 so little improvements would be expected

The M910 gained indicator Windows but there must be date numbers on those parts...

And the story goes on :D
I did a rebuild if the left side trigger contraption, in fact I did it three times before doing a write up.
I decided to only explain how to get it all together again, because it seems more logic somehow. Its usually easy to take things apart but more difficult to get them together properly.

So before I begin I have two things to mention. First, the main nut is again left handed thread!
Second, there are two very thin brass washers that tend to stick to their neighboring part unnoticed. I managed to crimple one while cleaning. So watch out!

Ok, so this is how the whole thing looks like in his unwashed beauty

to be continued...

In the top ratchet part, the white cable holder comes for a good clean or replacment (some models these crack easily), also the pawls and black bit* comes of and out of the inner ratchet holder.

*this is easy to snap by the way.

They are not to difficult and once you remember to reset the top inner ratchets and the fiddly bit is often the middle spring, (a loop on one side) sometime it just goes no porblem, other you'll be throwing the shofter...

Oh those inner ratchet can be taken apart, too? That is a very good hint. I'll have to add that.
I was under the impression that those bolts were pressed and not removable...

Here is your pic, you trying to show:

Re:

That other rear shifter look a lot like the inners of an XT like the M095 (7 speed), not seen the innards of an ST-M008 (8sp) but would assume thay had moved onto the new styling.
M910 in 1995 was the next XTR lever but it's not that as it had windows..
The cover could be a front cover tha happened to fit.

...may be
