With protestors blockading Tesco stores due to their involvement in the government's work scheme...

...s it right that JSA claimants should have to work for their benefits to continue, or is this tantamount to modern day slavery?

I totally agree with this in principal.....I just question the provision of free labour to tesco, one of the largest companies in the country, while small business is left to its own devices.....the underclass of lazy people in this country happy to play the system to live undeservedly off taxpayer money is one of the biggest thorns in the nations side.......

Insted of them going to tesco's why dont they get them doing community projects? Must be plenty of voluntary organisations that could do with some extra manpower.

id be happy to work for the council for free where the whole community benifits from the work but not for tesco or other profit based organisations, it will prevent them creating real jobs for jobs seekers and takes advantage of the desprate situation a lot of people are in.

That's pretty much my feeling too. The unemployed should absolutely be made to do something for their benefit, but imo it should be charities, community groups or as you say small businesses who gain from it.

Even if there's no job at the end of it it encourages routine, self respect and an opportunity to develop transferable work skills even for a short period.

It's a shame that such a scheme is being criticised AFAICS more for the companies involved than the principle of work for benefit.

even so a lot of charitys pay good money for workers, that may force people out of work replacing a paid worker with an unpaid worker. i dont think theres any quick fix for the situation.
