Will driverless cars remove two wheels from the road?

I know they have carried out many miles testing but that hasn't stopped some from crashing. So along with what if? questions that pop into your head, I wonder if they will ban cycles and motorcycles from the road given they are unable to be riderless?

Discuss :D

Unlikely. One of the (many) reasons for driverless cars is that they don't ignore more vulnerable road users.

Re:

my guess is that our great grandchildren will look back and laugh when they hear that people were allowed to drive cars on the roads.

My question is can you get them to drive you home from the pub?

Probably yes....eventually! It's an interesting question when autonomous cars get so good that the driver is truly redundant.

The bit I worry about is the intermediate stages when drivers get de-skilled from lack of practice...yet get asked to take over when the autonomous system decides it's out of its capability; for example in a snowstorm.

A riderless bike would be very useful though lol.

I got a few riderless bikes hanging up on the garage wall

Seriously I don't thinks 2 wheels will ever be taken off the roads for good, but they may have increased restrictions of what roads they can go on and forced on to designated paths. the thought of awesome traffic free cycle paths is nice but probably not in my lifetime. :(

There's a lot of drivers out there already that are de-skilled from passing their driving test, so no change there really

Re:

There is a current discussion within the car / technology industries wrestling with the problem of who to save when a crash becomes inevitable.

Apparently Mercedes have chosen to protect the driver.

I assume BMW and Audi will follow that lead and so in the end we will not be able to tell the driverless cars from those with drivers.
