Why won't my cassette tool not fit?

The free hub is blocking the tool from entering the slots. It only goes in about 1mm and this slips.

Any ideas?

it's the washer between the lock nut and the cone, it stops the tool from going all the way in which makes it slip. get a long quick release and bolt the tool in place by doing up the QR and then use an adjustable spanner to turn the lock ring.

That sounds a bit strange. Why are the washers so big then. Or are the older cassettes different fitting

Oh, I thought they were all the same. I've only ever used one tool for all the modern cassettes/wheels I have over the years

They are all meant to be the same, but have to be slightly different to avoid lawsuits.
The washer under the drive side locknut doesn't get on well with certain tool/ lockring combinations
But if you can hold the tool on there with a long bolt then it will come off.

Another problem is the habit of torqueing the lockring down like its a fixed lockring. even the recommended Torque is way higher than needed - but this makes removal a challenge if the tool can't be easily inserted and held in there.

Yes, I remember trying to remove a cassette from this wheel before...in the end I had to undobthevaxle and slip it out of the way.

What kind of torque would you recommend?

There are thinner walled, longer splined tools that fit.

Mine is a Pedro's or Park, about 27 years old though!
