Now this may seem a random rant to some ,relevant to others, but has anyone got kids that are collecting Football cards?
our youngest is obsessed with these cards called 'Match Attax' which have players and stats on them.
Now we are supporting this hobby as its not harming anyone and he enjoys them but it all came home to me yesterday whilst at a local 'boot sale talking with a guy selling them on behalf of his kid. He was charging up to a fiver for these cards (the ultra-exclusive ones, obviously) but it got me thinking, why are these cards so expensive? what gives them the right to charge this extortionate sum?

I mean, when you try and order some from the makers themselves, you can only order a set amount and there are even cards that are only available in certain stockists, for instance there are cards of a player named William Gallas who only appears in 1 in 100 packets only available from McColls newsagent. I cannot see this being particularly fair as not everyone has one of the shops nearby and would certainly not wish to lay out for 100 packets (at 50p each approx.) in the vague hope that you may find said card.

Am I wrong in thinking that its so far-removed from what we as lads did with Football stickers? we would never even consider asking our parents to lay out the equivalent of £25 for, say, the Manchester United shiny foil badge, you'd end up with a clout for your troubles.

Anyway, rant over, I hope I'm not alone in this printed cardboard maelstrom.

i collected pokemon cards
it sort of feels now like a 'mini' fashion statement whereby if you dont have them your not cool

I collected god-know's-how-many different stickers when I were a lad.

I remember specifically the Panini football sticker album, and the associated world-cup sticker album of the same year. Spent a bleedin' fortune on all of them (weird cos I detest football) and I remember my parents writing a cheque out, on each occasion for the remainder of the stickers I needed to complete the albums. Not sure if the kids stand in the playground any more going thru each other's stickers in a "got, got, got, need" type fashion

My 11yr old has bought a dozen of these bloomin MatchAttax sticker packs in the last couple of weeks and he can't stand football either (just because of the world-cup) and now they're just sat doing nothing in his room - what a waste, at least we had a book to put them in, BITD 8)

Oh and then there's those damn credit card crunch Visa replica's..........................  :x

i used to collect puzzles.........hang on...yup still do cept they cost 60 quid each now.....oh and gadgets....

When I was a kid the Garbage Pail Kids were all the rage, and the Cabbage Patch Kids too, but to a lesser extent ... so ... who still has any of those cards laying around the house then?! (Not me by the way, I couldn't be arsed with them first time around, let alone looking for them now on eBay!! Lol!!) Lxx

hang on...... you seem suprised that something to do with professional football is expensive. think match day tickets, replica shirts, official merchandise.......

football is no longer a sport, it is a business pure and simple, anything that is endorsed by the 'game' is going to be stacked in a way to make them squeeze as much money out of their 'fans' as they possibly can.
