When did skin/amberwall tyres stop?

I remember seeing some all black Onzas in my LBS in 90-91 and bought a pair for the 'Dale the next weekend. Within a few weeks every local rider had them- you almost got the piss taken if you had amberwalls after that amongst my group. I'd stopped riding by 93 so thankfully missed the coloured wall thing that happened in the late 90's.
