When did skin/amberwall tyres stop?

however,a little of topic, the xc racers are now sporting ambers so maybe theyer coming back? hope so :D

a few of the top end sponsored XC racers are using tufo & dugast tub tyres, but they're pretty expensive & a PITA to install in a rush. So I wouldnt assume a wholesale return to relatively cheap amber/skinwalls for normal innertube compatible tyres.

Yes, lots of 47mm Dugast Rhinos in evidence at Dalby, very nice. Made a very distinctive sound as they came bombing along, too 8)

dunno when ambers/skins were phased out, but i already had set of black smokes when i had my RM Experience built in 1990. to me ambers were already out of fashion!

proof is in the pudding so here's a pic. definitely no later than 91-93 as that's when it got stolen. so purchased/built around 90-91 for sure.

Can't remember who did the first all black skinwall tire??? Maybe Panaracer or Onza...but my original build on my 91 Xizang had all black Porcupines on it. I was still buying amber skinwalls from Panaracer and IRC for inventory in 1996 but not near the volume that was sold in the early 90's. When black hit it grabbed a lot of market share fast. Aftermarket tends to always follow the OE spec.

1991 Saracen Traverese Hydrotech Competition was specced with blackwall Tioga Mud / Trail dawg tyres. The Trekker Hydrotech with Farmer John black wall tyres. So the movement was there very early on, skin/amber walls hung in for a long time.

I believe the tan skin wall color is the natural color of the casing. They started dying them black for a different look. Some of the tires have the actual black rubber over the sidewalls which is different.
