^^ Agreed, that front mech cage looks like it is bent up, try bending it back or better still replace the mech with a good double model. I'd go old school to match the chainset style

hehe, sadly, I think that if I was to replace it, I'd go modern. This is supposed to become my everyday bike, and I find the modern Shimano shifters to be so much more comfortable than anything else.

One other thought, is your BB too short? May be the case if you are running a smallish ring which sits close to the stay?

Got to be the mech is at fault then, maybe opt for a Sora / Tiagra double that is STI friendly

Twisted and high isn't a good combo.
It's difficult to subjectively evaluate, but grab the cage and give it a wiggle to see how much play there is in the pivots. F/mech shifting can be a bit of a nightmare if there is slop in the system.
It will all look "ok" and not rattly when the machine is static, as the pantograph spring loads everything up, but have a close look when you shift it in the workstand; is there slop in the system that makes the cage "cock" when you try and shift.

Long and the short of it, you're using modern components, there should never be a situation where the f/mech contacts the crank.
