What's going on with this derailleur-crank combo? They interfere

Hello everyone,

A few months ago I got myself an Orbit Harrier. It sat around for a while, until yesterday I had the time to replace the parts that needed replacing (which was most of them, turns out...).
Among them, I swapped the groupset with a (partial) 6500 triple which I paired with a Sugino VP crankset. Looks great, but when switching to the outer chainring, the derailleur interferes with the crank arm. How is that possible?
And in this photo I already have the derailleur one click inwards compared to what it actually takes to switch up to the outer ring. I still have to fine tune the position of the derailleur, sure, but having never had this problem before I was wondering if there is something else I'm not seeing.

Front mech looks too wide, my old narrow front mechs from the 80’s would do the job though

Afaik more modern front mechs for compact chain sets and a wide 10 + speed cassette at the back might not be compatible with your chainset ?

its chainset a Cinelli-Magistroni thing-a-ma-bob with T.A. chainwheels
the front mech was an all-metal Juy L.J. 23 pushrod chappie contemporaneous with frame

cycle's owner requested fitment of a Campag Record front mech

we ran into this same snag so back on the bike went Monsieur Lucien...problem solved

have ofttimes thought we should have an accepted term in the trade for this clearance measurement much like we have "Q-factor" for the overall width of a chainset

The Sugino crank might sit further out than the Ultegra front derailleur was designed for. Try measuring the chainline and compare with Shimano specs
 
The chainline is good...for a double.

The problem might be that I am trying to use a triple derailleur as a double. The irony is that I switched to double because the triple crankset was not working well haha
 
Can't really see everything I'd like to see in the pictures but it looks to me as if the front mech is angled. Ideally the outer cage should be parallel with the chain rings. Also get an impression that the cage is high too - it should clear the outer chain ring teeth by no more than 3-4 mm at most.
Back in the day it wasn't unusual to have to bend the front of the inner plate of the cage a little towards the outer plate to get a chain to climb onto the outer ring.
 
^^ Agreed, that front mech cage looks like it is bent up, try bending it back or better still replace the mech with a good double model. I'd go old school to match the chainset style 😎

The cage IS high, yes.
I had to place the deraillaur much higher than I would have wanted to because at a "normal" height, the bump pf the inner plate of the cage was just squishing the chain onto the chainring but not achieving a shift.
