What !!!!!??????? !!!

or - if you're not afraid of welsh dragon breath:

There are two types of rider, those that know what they're riding and those that dont care.

The second lot can sometime contain a Scant or two 'you way is wrong, I'm right' 'thats crap' 'its not as good as' blah blah blah etc, these Scant types dont seem to realize that the other type exists. They tend to be a bit pompus about what they do and often come across as arrogant twats to the other types.

The other type knows what they're riding and know how much it cost to replace if they bend it. Bikes are looked after and thought about for more than, oh lets say, the next ******* ride perhaps?

Mech hangers can be reset quite a few times and threads can be repared - becuase I've ******* done it and so have quite a few others judging by this thread about a high priced XT thumbshifter

Thumbshifters work perfectly well and the name can be a bit of a misnomer as some riders can shift with the index finger knuckle - as I do. This keeps the hands firmly clamped to the handle bars as I scream to my death over a badly misjudged incline.

Early STI was shit - push push ratchets were too small and wore easily leading to bad mishifts - XT Rapid fire had a similar problem. This all gave the STI a bad name which seems to have stuck with some people ever since. The current STI is fanatstic - set it up properly and it'll be great.

I like my Deore thumbshifters but prefer 9 spd Deore STI for shifting performance. I use Deore/ XT thumbies as they suit the builds.

I use LX 9spd as they came from the tip

now where did that grenade pin go??

and the mech hanger bolt is hollow with a zip tie through it. A big enough whack and the ally bolt should break, but the mech is kept in place by the zip tie, things I hope will stay in place long enough to come to a satisfactory and recoverable stop.

does that actually work? I tried the replacement alu bolt trick on previous non replaceable mech hanger frames & the circlip would always ping out & loose the spring tension.

just saw your location. I lived & rode plymouth 92-96 & again in 98 b.t.w :)
I miss some of those trails

I think the idea is the zip tie stops all the gubbins in the hanger assembly from being thrown to the four winds when it explodes. Tight enough, it should keep most things in place and being plastic against metal, the mech spring tension will overcome any resistance posed by the tightness of the zip tie.

But you having suffered the spring clip dissapearing, do you not carry one as a spare now ?

I would, and do carry some small odds and sods for that just in case scenario, well packed against rattle and stuffed inside my bar ends. The good thing being, when I can't remember where I put my spares at home, I know there is a spare in the bike. I do carry ally jockey cage bolts now, featherweight and there for the shit happens type situation if it ever occurs again. Ally bolts being better, as if thety get yanked out, it is usually only the bolt threads that suffer.

So many places on bikes to stuff spares, seat tubes, handlebars, bar ends etc, does anyone else carry spares ?

I work as a tour guide so I have to carry waay more spares than I'd like sometimes! as soon as replacement mech hangers came along on frames I stopped using the alu bolts. if you do a LOT of miles & ride in filthy conditions the small amount of rotation on that bolt can generate a surprising amount of wear which shows itself as play.
I'm big enough to admit I'm still learning, so on the few of my VRC bikes that I do ride I'll try the ziptie trick.. as with everyone else I hope it doesnt come to hurting my precious VRC bikes

given that you've never met me & know zip about me, hidden behind your monitor you might feel a big guy right now & thats kinda funny. but hey I'm thick skinned, often seem as arrogant as i've been immersed in the bike industry for quite some time & have pretty strong views. so hey thats all fair game. Singling people out for name calling is kinda feeble. you're entitled to your view, just chill out ;)

my point all along was that if you're paying £82 for thumbies I hope its for VRC period correct reasons (which I have zero problems with) & not purely because you think they work better.

I must point out that I'm not feeling a big guy right now, he's out shopping for hair care products.

you could just try being a little less brusque all of the time? I singled you out as I think you are just too intimidating to other memebers who ask simple questions.

There are strong veiws but not everyone needs to be bludgeoned over the head with them.

£82 is strong for a pretty good condition pair of XT thumbies but compared to other recent prices, its not that much, not even a tank of fuel for some.

you're entitled to your view, but blatent name calling isnt helping your case.

OK 'twat' I take back and apologise for but 'arrogant' and 'pompus' still apply - 'blatant name calling' doesnt cover up this fact/ strong view.
