The theory was that I could find a bike that I lusted after 15 years ago dirt cheap, after all it would be 15 or more years old. Even though outdated I figured the old stuff would be no worse for having been superseded so I didn't mind looking a bit old.

you'd get better valve for money looking for something thats 4-5yrs old

It's always going to be the case on ebay that if you get 2 people who really want an item the price will go daft. I watched many pairs of thumbies go for 30/50 quid in the last few months so I guess the seller just got lucky.

That, I never could understand, the bidding that goes in before the auction, hiking the price up. but I suppose it serves one good purpose, it gives me a good indication of what I might be expected to pay at least, if I win, and I always snipe, usually in the last five seconds. I go with, some you win, some you loose, but each loss extends the base line for which to arrive at a reasonable maximum I would expect to bid.

My reason for getting them again, is because thumbies are the only shifter I have ever used, and am used to them, it's a natural reaction to move the thumb over the bar looking for the gear change, the rapid fire things I did have, did'nt work for me. B.

Mine too. My fingers are above the bar. I have to move my fingers under the bar to change with the new kit. Give me thumb levers every time

your thumb is "naturally" tucked under the handlebar, moving the thumb above the bar isnt natural, its something you've learnt. thumbies may last for a very long time, but the ergonomics of both sram & shimano are waaay better.

Same here. I think I sold 3 XT rear mechs within 1 week.
Same era, same size etc.
The first one went for good money, with loads of bidders.
For whatever reason, the losing bidders then never bothered with the other 2 (identical) mechs, which sold for peanuts.

Ebay is so much about luck on the day & whatever weird stuff goes through the minds of some buyers (>£80 for thumbies! Hahahaha!)
