Ededwards would run down there quicker than that.

The guy's a random dude on the internet, I'm sure there's faster riders. I went about that fast down freight train and my friends were hauling on me! Also, the point of riding at a bike park is to go fast enough to hit the downward-sloped transition. This means you've gotta be hauling and clearing the 4-6 foot flat spots. It's not like this trail is overly technical. (Others are, see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWMOrbbZW6k)

The video isn't the best at getting things across. I wish I lived closer to you guys so I could demonstrate 'proper use' of a downhill bike. There are no cantis to be seen in Whistler :)

surely it depends more on the rider skills .

Vouilloz on a hardtail will be faster than me on a full susension bike .

I never meant my comment as a serious point. It's sort of an in house joke. Ed just tends to run down hills a lot! That sort of riding is all about bottle. If huge amounts of travel help with that then fine. There were always people with a higher degree of nerve and skill. 65 years ago they flew Spitfires, Mustangs and ME109's for longer than their peers. 15-20 years ago they rode rigid bikes with cantilevers a lot faster downhill than I could dream of. Now they ride bikes with lots of travel. Most things are ridable on most bikes. I suspect those trails were being ridden long before 8" of travel was the norm. Like Chris said someone like Tomac (I can spell his name) would still beat the majority of random bods on the internet using his old kit. Anyway, I'm off now for a ride on a bike with no travel and 23 section tyres pumped up to 110psi. Now that would be slow down there!

Oh absolutely, and same here. I'm not God's gift to DH'ing by any stretch, although the transition is pretty quick if you're a decent technical rider.

The second trail wouldn't be impossible on a hardtail, although it's steeper than it looks. You certainly couldn't go that fast. (The headcams make the trails look easier and less steep than in real life.)

There's certainly a marketing aspect to DH'ing... bikes that look more like dirt bikes and no pedaling up hills gets the non-cyclists into showrooms. And yeah, a DH bike is not that useful in a flat place.

But when you get one in action on a good trail, it's pretty amazing.

I have to say that if i had the cash , a holiday in Whistler with a big bike would be pretty special by looking at all the videos .

Some moons ago, was riding up at Chicksands, poncing about on a very shiny rebuild number 56b Zaskar some old git on a spanky new £3k Elsworth took the piss simply becuase my bike was old and clean, he just didnt get it.

Didnt understand that it was meant to be like that, you fool.
