what tools to fix bottom bracket?

konahed

Kona Fan
I have a 1991 Kona and there is a lot of play in the bottom bracket area. What tools do I need to taken the cranks and bottom bracket apart and regrease and tighten? I dont have a bike tool kit.

Re:

Has it got a sealed bottom bracket or loose bearings, I assume a sealed one.

Typically

A set of allen keys to remove the crank bolts, a crank puller/removal tool. And depending on what bottom bracket you have you may need a splined bottom bracket removal tool.

Re:

what tools you need depends on what sort of bottom bracket is on the bike.

Older style cup & cone bottom bracket is at the bottom of the pic (you need a (14mm?) socket for the crank bolt, a crank-puller tool, C-spanner, Pin Spanner, and an adjustable wrench). You can still buy replacement parts for these BB's ie bearings, cups, axles, depending if parts are worn out.

More modern Shimano sealed bottom bracket type as seen at the top of the 1st pic, (you need a large allen key ( 9mm  ) a crank puller tool, and the special serrated tooth tool to remove the cups).
These are a sealed "fit & forget unit" if it's knackered you'll have to throw it in the bin and buy a new one.

Don't forget, the drive side is a LEFT HAND THREAD!

Also, you may find it difficult to remove after being in the frame for so long, some penetrating oil , and if possible some down the seatpost to work its way into the threads from the inside will help, as will lots of leverage

If the Crank bolts are allen key type it will be 8mm, or it could also be bolt heads requiring a socket set. (Cant remember size for this.)

There's a good description of how you do this here:

Thanks, I've updated my post, memory is failing me

Re:

Taxc or XTool will do.

Big adjustable at a push or headset spanner but they are not so good at it. 36mm

Screwdrivers for the other side if you wish to bodge it.
