Just found one that I had forgotten.
Its Richards Mountain Bike Book by Charles Kelly and Nick Crane from about 1990. Some good old stuff in there

A book from 1988

just found a first edition of the venerable Mountain Biking Handbook by Barry Ricketts – printed in 1988

There's some fantastic stuff in here. Fluro Overburys, Ridgebacks and, as a closing piece at the back, an introduction into the bike of the future – the 'lightweight but ultra-stiff carbon/kevlar frame' Kestrel MXZ (complete with biopace rings)

And not a single pic of suspension – well there wouldn't be would there?

----------

Got me thinking though – wouldn't it be great to have a modern book on retro bikes, a look back at all the old stuff. What worked, what didn't. Maintenance tips that are fitting for all our old-school kit rather than all this modern (over-engineered) stuff [he says, looking at the NRS over in the corner]. Noticed even the mags are starting to sit up and take notice of our little world.

I have MTB Pro's "Classic Mountain Bike Rides in Britain" by Tim Woodcock from 1995 - some cracking photos of Nishiki Aliens, Kestrels, Paces etc.

Got a couple of videos, Kamikazi (or however its spelt  ) and a 'How to ride MTB's' one.

Got the Brant Richard/John Stevenson Mountain Bike Repair Book (or summat like that), really cool with an RC100 on the front cover and lots of really old skool bikes inside.....lots of MTB trail guides and at the weekend I angle grinded off a padlock on an old blanket box full of VCR tapes and found an unopened copy of Dirt   I didn't even know I had it....that has to be watched if only for the JMR content

EDIT...blimey you can still buy it

Thought that picture rang a bell, got that book too albeit in a smaller format with softback cover.
Seems to be quite a bit of good reference material in these books for anyone building up older bikes
