A book from 1988
just found a first edition of the venerable Mountain Biking Handbook by Barry Ricketts – printed in 1988
There's some fantastic stuff in here. Fluro Overburys, Ridgebacks and, as a closing piece at the back, an introduction into the bike of the future – the 'lightweight but ultra-stiff carbon/kevlar frame' Kestrel MXZ (complete with biopace rings)
And not a single pic of suspension – well there wouldn't be would there?

Got me thinking though – wouldn't it be great to have a modern book on retro bikes, a look back at all the old stuff. What worked, what didn't. Maintenance tips that are fitting for all our old-school kit rather than all this modern (over-engineered) stuff [he says, looking at the NRS over in the corner]. Noticed even the mags are starting to sit up and take notice of our little world.
