What is....

47mph (old wired computer) riding my British Eagle Shadow on the mad downhill tarmac between Mytchett and Pirbright in Surrey. On Farmer John's Nephew tyres

Could have beaten that these days but nearest I actually do know is 40mph coming down off Warbuton Bridge between Lymm and Hollins Green. I only knew this because the top speed on my HRM indicated it when I panted into work.

As for my snowboard - I wouldn't want to know and neither would my Mrs. The world cup downhill run down into Les Houches at Chamonix immediately springs to mind. Thinking that this is going to be A Very Bad Thing if I caught an edge just then.

On the flat, 38mph on my Scott Montana BiTD; I know that's accurate because the Plod were sitting in a layby on Plumstead Road in Norwich on my way home one night and he zapped me with the radar gun and called it out as I tore past

Used to regularly get 50+ on the same bike going down Ketts Hill; I was much fitter then (obviously!), and running on 1.9 Tioga City Slickers with 80psi...

I used to road race in London & during training regularly topped 55 north of Harrow & regulary stopped by plod & warned.
On mtb during road training on slicks hit mid 40 couldn't tell you exactly as I hit gravel & ended up unconcious for 45 mins in a ditch with undamaged bike jammed against a fractured thema & a 4 inch gash in my forehead.
I loved that cannondale & it will have a new owner tonight!

try going up ketts hill on a road bike....eek

My 'claim to fame' (one of...) was giving my daughter a 'seaty' up Ketts Hill one Friday evening...

...another was hitting the side of a bus going down the hill so hard it left red paint on the sleeve of my T-shirt!

I was going down the hill on the way to work one morning when a parked car pulled out in front of the bus ahead of me suddenly and without warning! The bus swerved round him and stopped but 1.9 Tioga City Slickers don't have quite the contact patches of bus tyres...

...I had three choices; hit the back of the parked cars on the left, and die; swerve round the bus to the right into oncoming traffic, and die; or aim for the tiny gap between the bus and the car!

I hit the rear nearside of the bus with my right shoulder and came to rest, upright, leaning on the roof of the car to my left; the car then drove off, dragging me the length of the bus where I promptly fell into the road once the car had cleared the bus and driven off down the hill...

...the poor bus driver thought I was dead! The car didn't even stop!

I got back on my bike and carried on cycling into work!

I didn't cycle down Ketts Hill at 50+ mph any more after that...

Once got up to just under 70 mph in the dark on an old racing bike one handed! The other hand was holding on to my mates sholder as he was riding along on his suzuki. Had to grip the top tube with my legs to try and stop the bike wobbling was a long time ago and still makes me laugh but makes me cringe as well you do some bloody daft things when your young

An indicated 52mph coming off the Downs near Storrington in 1994 on a fully rigid Univega Rover T2.5, I was showing off and it scared the poop out of me, especially when my helmet decided to move to the air brake position on the back of my head half way down!
