What is it?

Paddy1985

Retro Newbie
Hi guys,

I'm not sure how relevant this is, but my dad bought a roady the year before I was born. We're talking about 1984. Every time when I go home (Netherlands) I see and admire the bike itself. I was wondering if there was a good story behind the bike or if somebody has any clue what on earth it is?

What I do know:
Koga Miyata Super Winner (1984)
Shimano 600
368km (230Miles) in total
In origional state (as far as I'm aware)

Any other things you guys can make up from the piccies?

That are Miyata US catalogues. Old Koga-Miyata catalogues you find on the Koga.com website.

It is an excellent bike. It has much in common with the roadbike I ride most, my 1984 Pro-Am. Same tubing, roughly the same component spec. All very well functioning stuff. It sat 4 models from the top and the real candy is the FullPro-S for that year, but you have a very competent bike. Decent light, reliable, flawless build quality and the best there is paint quality.

Wow great find! Amazing to see it the EXACT same in the brochure! Such a shame that the frame is to small for me.

Is there anyone else out here who has the same sort of bike?
Any experiences?

Has it ever raced professionally as well? Not that bike obviously, but rather the brand?

All excited about this now!

In the late 70s and early 80s the IJsboerke and Capri Sonne pro teams raced with the distinctive blue/gold FullPros. You can view them in the catalogues.

In the late 80s/early 90s Koga sponsored the Koga-Miyata/Bikeplan amateur team.

In the early 90s Koga sponsored the Tulip Computers pro team.

Koga sponsored the Agu amateur team in the mid 90s.

Koga sponsored team Farm Frites.

Koga built Theo Bos' Kimera among more track bikes.

Koga supplies material to current Skil-Shimano.

So yes, Koga has been very active in road racing.

Miyata sponsored MTB champ Greg Herbold. The flamboyant rider conquered the 1st Downhill World title in 1990 and several Norba Cups. In Europe Greg raced Kogas.

That looks incredibly fresh, the gum hoods look good enough to eat. I recently acquired the Gentsracer of that year, one model above.

The paint looks almost new and I have been busy giving it new bar tape, hoods, brake cables, saddle (still have the original, but it's a fleshy pink instead of the bright red it should be), pedals, stem cap and am currently busy changing the wheels since the original rear wheel had the biggest flat spot I've ever seen and the front wheel didn't match the bike at all.

Not going totally original, since the new rims are Wolber TX and the front and rear derailleurs are campagnolo instead of the shimano 600 they should be (I have some correct derailleurs lying around, so I intend to bring it up to spec some day, but I'm not too confident about my budding building skills just yet). And then there's the bar end lights, which are hardly correct, but I kind of like them.

Here's a picture I took on my test drive when I found out the rear rim was done for. I've since changed the BLB saddle for a red Concor vintage and the pedals for correct shimano 600 ones. Sorry, no better pictures yet.
