What car? Ideas needed...

How about a nice Lancia Beta Monte Carlo S2? Get a decent one for 5k. Or find a solid MOT'ed but scruffy Alfa Guilia Coupe needing improving for 4-5k. Great cars both and easy to look after- very reliable too.

Si

Great cars, very cool, but I wouldn't have put Lancia and reliable in the same sentence until now.
I think we'd just end up ruining them, as it will be an everyday car and the miles will soon rack up.

That mk1 is awsome!! 8) Wouldn't mind seeing the mi16 myself. I'm really more into german cars but at one point had a 205 1.9 gti to hoon around in, and my mate had a mint mi16 conversion. What a motor it was, nearly killed him in the end.....literaly(bad smash, he was in a bad way). He's now partial to running around in old tank like mercs

That's another reason why I want her to get a new car, 205's are just tin cans  I would like her to have some crumple zones

Ford Puma 1.7: new enough to be reliable, fun, sturdy. You guys are all talking about classics!

I don't think she like these, but i'll run it past her.

Corrado ....

I like Corrado's but there aren't many now below a 100k miles.

How much are they now? I think rear visibility might be a problem for her in those though :?

All my Italian classics have been super reliable. Took the Alfa down to Le Mans last year and didn't lift the bonnet once in a very high speed 1500 mile round trip (Portsmouth to Northumberland in 4hrs 49mins on the way back  . I use the Alfa everyday from May to October and do around 7000 miles a year in it. It has had the throttle linkage fall off once (30 second fix) in the last 4 years- thats it, super reliable.

volvo t5 ...think of all the room in the back for bike related fun......fast little car too.....does about 160 if ya push it ....

C4 vts - you can get them from 5k

my misses has an A3 1.8T Sport '52 plate, last of the first shape, 3door, very safe, predictable, solid, not a brillaint drive but no slouch on the straights.....all the extras you could dream of, 3.5k at the begining of the year, must be quite cheap now. i wouldnt want her driving anything else to be honest it has airbags where i wouldnt think was possible.

Had Mk1 Campaign don't think it's practical enough for you.
Even a minter like mine which was worth 4k was still fraught with problems.
It's the age thing and inevitable.

As suggested a Phase 2 Clio 172 would be good choice.
I have one of these as a run around a myself and wife love it.

Drinks next to nothing in fuel. Picked ours up last July 03 plate with 65k for 3.5k off a dealer.

I can second the 1.7 Puma. It handles brilliantly well on country roads and you can chuck a bike in the back.

If you want cheap fun our MX5 would probably be available for the right offer ;). No room for a bike though and no fun on motorways.

Right, these are her replies to the cars suggested so far

➡️ 306 GTi-6:- on the list
➡️ Fiesta ST:- too expensive, maybe
➡️ Clio 172/182:- on the list
➡️ Fiat stilo 2.4:- no
➡️ Lancia Beta Monte Carlo S2 / Alfa Guilia Coupe:- Although cool cars, need something modern.
➡️ Mrk 1 Golf:- What am i gaining over the 205 GTi?
➡️ VW Corrado:- all seem to have high miles
➡️ Ford Puma 1.7:- probably not
➡️ C4 VTS:- Not that keen
➡️ MX5:- her dad already has one
