hi all.

My friend has just bought the necessary equipment to enable him to remap a car's ECU.

The basic theory is that the cars brain is altered to allow it to either run more efficiently or to create more power. In the vast majority of cases both are achieved at the same time. These maps are written for specific engines and can be tweaked to suite youe exact engine.

My friend is working alongside my father and between them they have nearly 60 years experience of modifying cars. everything from ford anglias through to supercharged mx5's and a 500bhp rs4. they have both been messing around with cars most of their luives. my dad used to race rally cross in a mk2 escort too!

Car manufacturers actually use this technology in their different models. for example the mini one is exactly the same engine as the cooper but the one's ecu limits the throttle to 68%. same engine, 100% throttle, you have a cooper!

Your standard map will be copied so your car can be put back to standard if you wish. The replacement map is then uploaded onto your ECU and the gains are felt straight away.

There are three stages of tune available.

The first is an economy map. Don't expect much power increase, if any as this map concentrates on fuel economy. The car is still driveable and wont be any slower, but it will use less fuel.

The second stage, and the most popular combines fuel economy and performance. Just to give you an idea my friend has an audi A4 1.9tdi. After the remap i couldn't keep up with it in my track prepped mk2 Golf GTI. The audi pulled away from it in every gear. It was also getting 53mpg!

A Range Rover Sport he did had a 50 bhp increace and a 10% fuel saving.

The third stage is for performance. You can expect a 200bhp car to increase by about 50 bhp eg 1.8 turbo audi tt (225) rolling roaded at 275bhp, subaru impreza sti 60bhp increase.

What can he do?

Just about any car built after 2000. There are a few cars that are pre 2000 but not many.

Petrol and diesel.

He concentrates mainly on European cars but he can do Japanese as well (prices are higher for Jap though as it uses different, more expensive equipment). He can also do vans and lorries.

Vehicles with a turbocharger or variable boost supercharger give the best results to remapping. Non turbo cars will drive better but the performance increases wont be as impressive as turbo cars.

What is the cost and retrobike discount?

He charges £265 for a remap on any stage of tune. Japanese cars are £50 extra. He is willing to offer a £40 discount to Retrobike members bringing the cost down to £225. You must mention Retrobike when you book your car in though.

These prices are based on you bringing your car to him (Lincolnshire). He will travel to you but this will affect the price and he would need to have access to a reliable wireless internet connection.

If you would like to discuss anything further please call Gareth on 07837827499 or reply to this thread and i'll ask him and get back to you.

Just a toe in the water - a 1999 Saab 93 TiD 2.2 (diesel)? Doesn't have that special plug I think you need as post-2000 cars do.

How long would it take? A morning?

i would need to check he can get into the ecu but a morning is about right. german stuff tends to be about an hour all told, alfa's can take as long as 6.

but thats the pesky italians for you

right, gareth has just called with an offer. book your car in in the next 7 days and he'll do the remap for £200 in the lincolnshire/yorkshire area. will go further for a bit of fuel money.

any car, any stage £200

I take it he is downloading "generic" maps from another tuner for that price.

Whats the source of the maps?

they are generic maps but are fettled to suite the engine (original map emailed to map supplier. they pull a suitable map and tune it for the particular engine.)

supplied by dimsport

price is also low as his overheads are low and he is starting out so driopping the proce to drum up business
