Problem solved

Lovely cars Saab's but she doesn't like the way turbo's drive, be it a petrol or diesel.

I think the visibility is poor in the newer Type R's
Not considered the Seat, i'll run it past her.
The later Golf's seem like big heavy slow battleships, that's what they look like compared to a light sprinty 205 anyway.

Everyone should have one of these.

Is a Pug 205 really cooler than this?

I mentioned an Alfa 147 before, as I drove one as a hire car once, but since i recieved no positive feedback about them I ruled them out... did they do a sporty petrol model? I've only driven a diesel :(

they absolutely did a sporty petrol.
Try the 2.0 TS and you won't get dissapointed. (TI package is beautifull, nice sport leather seats)
don't go for the selespeed but go for the hanual gearbox.
The GTA version might be a bit pricey

I'm a big VW fan, had a Mk1 Campaign and currently have a MK2 GTI. But you lot have missed the only modern equivalent to the MK1 GTI - the VW Lupo GTI. It is everything the Golf GTI Mk1 was - ie light, powerful and corners but with all the modern extras - VW build quality, reliable, air con, great sound system. They are destined to be a future classic. 6 speed gearbox, cheapish to insure. Post 2001 is a must, with the 6 speed box, still a number of original ones left.

I'm looking at getting a new car, my MK2 GTI is getting a bit wearing on my 1.5hr commute everyday. I would love to get a Lupo GTI, but I'm going with a Volvo V40 T4 - Estate so I can chuck the bikes straight in, leather, air con , cruise and to top it all 200bhp! If I had the spare wedge I would without doubt replace my Mk2 with a Lupo GTI and give it to my girlfriend.
