was the 70's and 80"s that bad

Wow... I dont even have enough time to read through that, let alone disgest and respond

The only point I will respond to is about it being irrelevant.
Maybe I was being a tad glib, but from my persepective as someone who very much lives for the moment, enjoys the moment, and doesnt necesarily worry too much about what is lying round the corner (that said, I save, I plan, and do have pensions etc), I meant that its irrelevant to the now. I know that "now" is as culmination of what went before, but its just that I have seen some people spend so long harking back to when times were better, that they failed to enjoy the greatness that is today... I'm not being specific at all, just referencing various people I've met along the way

Don't get me wrong - I do get and recognise the crock that is "wasn't it all better then..." perspective about nostalgia.

All the same, though, there's often some plausible deniability, or reflex overreaction to the concept too.

Also, it does have to be said, it's a very normal, natural aspect of our psychology to reminisce with misty eyes as we grow older.

I think my point, though, was that many of the things that were crap, harsh, or restrictive, all have a bearing on how we evolve, and we can look at modern times and say "isn't it all better, now..." but does it help or hinder those that grow up through such modern times?

My son thinks everything in the 70"s and 80"s was rubbish, style and music. I thought it was colourful and fun.

What's your thoughts, and do you have any embarrassing to admit likes from this era

Mine is Soft Cell, as a punk lover this was defo my guilty pleasure

Alison

Soft Cell is not a guilty pleasure Alison - just a sign of good taste. I have everything they ever did.... And most of Marcs solo stuff too (which is of varying merit, unfortunately)

There is good stuff from every decade. And dross too. It just depends what you want to highlight. The 80s MAY also have been the last decade where where we really also saw true innovation. The 90s recycled the 60s and 70s. The 00ies recycled the 70s and 80s. At the moment there is 90s nostalgia even......

Most of the bands who did great stuff in the 90s came out of the 80s. The bands that broke the mould in the last decade were basically reminding us that guitar rock was... well.... the new rock n roll, after a decade of electronica.

If I had to choose one band from each decade to sum up their time it would be 60s - the Stones, 70s - Bowie, 80s - U2, 90s - Pulp, 00s - White Stripes. Sadly, nowadays the only bands I actually like have been going for over a decade.

The 70's were brown and dirty, covered in soot and stinking. Mainly of fags, beer, non catalytic exhaust fumes, crap food and clouds of diesel.

Technology was creeping in, it was the dawn of the digital age, cinema was changing, music had discovered electronics and all was getting rather exciting with hints of a new space age via the Space Shuttle.

Then the 80's came in, big hair, big shoulders and everything was very loud to a 7 year old. Food got better, sweets got better, Lego got better. Cars looked great and trans Atlantic record attempts were even better. The space age was fantastic only to die in 1986.

Just dont bring back the oatmeal woolens...

Confused.

Casuals, Scooter Boys and Terrace culture - that was when I was at comprehensive school. 1982 or so....

Madchester started to kick off when I was living there in summer 89 just before I went to France for a year. When I got back it was everywhere but was still lingering around when I moved back to Manchester in 92. When I moved to Denmark in 94 people were STILL talking about it. So I'd really call it a 90s phenomenon.
