You can buy a dog cheaply (under £1000) but bodywork/chassis is a killer if tinworm has got hold. Best to save and get a solid one IMHO unless you are a proficient welder, or are able to blackmail one.
Splitties are really serious money - wouldn't bother unless you want to impress the crowd at Newquay

Apart from chassis/body issues, the mechanicals are a piece of p1$$ - and spares/upgrades are abundant.
Buy "How to keep your Volkswagen alive" by John Muir. Great stuff.
Oh - and the exploding VW Camper scenario is avoidable by carefully placed lockwires on the fuel lines
