Viner Special

King in the north

Retro Newbie
Just bought this old Viner. The sticker in the back only says special but I assume its a special professional based on the columbus frame. It has very nice cut outs in the frame in the shape of stars and triangles. The rear end is chromed but I dont think thats original. Well sort of, someone has scraped of the paint and exposed the chrome under the paint i assume. The seat post is 27,2mm which is supposed to indicate a higher end Viner. Under the bottom bracket shell it has 55 stamped on the left for seat tube length and 55 on the right for top tube length plus a big cut out in the shape of a star. Mavic rims, vittoria tires and columbus front fork. The steering post is 3ttt and the bar is Cinelli. The rest of the components are Campagnolo apart from the san marco seat. I dont know any year of it, but the nuovo record shifter says patent 78 so if its the original shifter its built after that at least.

Im very happy with it this far. Rides very nice. The only downside so far is that i have to move the front derailer a little depending on which gear i have choosen in the back. Im not sure if either the front derailer is a bit crocked, I havent set it properly or if bike gears just werent better than this back in the days.

My plan with this is to try to keep in the same shape is it is now and enjoy it is much as possible in my free time. It is a really lovely bike to ride.

The only thing i have done to it so far is to clean and lube the gears and chain. Plus a service to the breaks. On to do list right now is only to go trough all the bearings and to fit a new chain. At least for now.

Re:

Sorry for late reply and maybe a dumb question, but what does lirc. stand for? Its actually quite noticeable when working on it that it was that pricey when it was new. So high quality on the machining on the parts, which makes it so fun to work on.

Very interresting with the syncro gear lever. I didnt know what it was before getting it pointed out. Got some interresting reading from that. It wasnt noticeable to me before that it has indexed shifting. But it always lands in the right place for the gear. It is much smoother when changing down then up. Also the lever doesnt move super smooth. Its a bit jumpy, sometimes it moves two gears instead of one when changing up. Not the best system ever, but it works(ok) and the build quality is so nice from the campagnolo parts that its a pleasure to look at.

Hi iirc means if I recall, that is from memory

Here's the price list I was thinking of...viner second from top lol, Yours is a little later.

In there was the under rated Carlton Professional frame which was a bargain.

I had a Grandis with a Syncro lever and despite all the negatives I have read, it worked really well: exact changing every time so didn't adjust it. I never needed to use the disengage lever for friction only operation.

I've just finished building a 47cm Viner Stella for my wife - fine frames indeed. How's your progressing?
