Technically it wasn't alive as it was no longer attached to the tree. The only bit with the potential for life was the seeds which are dormant until the right situation/conditions are available for life to begin again.
Fruit ripens after being picked purely because of the chemical processes brought about by temperature and sunlight and then begins to decay.
