VAT on Ebay

I was following some forks on Ebay Germany when I noticed, in the small print, that purchases under £135 are subject to added VAT which is collected by Ebay, over that amount and it is collectable later. So what looked affordable suddenly wasn't anymore. that will be on post as well.

I thought we here hadn't to pay charges since Brexit for a few months yet, importing that is.

Any one else been caught out or am I catching up at a snails pace !

Yes it’s pretty much messed up.

you’ll be charged VAT at the border and admin fee on top so it ends up to be quite expensive.
I usually contact the seller directly - sometimes they’re reasonable and transact as normal on eBay but send the item as a Gift with minimal declared value. This is a perfect response to the thieving government taxation

this isn’t because of Brexit - as with many things (including blaming corona for the messed up economy and everything) it’s the Governments “response@ to Brexit.

Don’t blame the people please!

the government had the Norway option which would have been ideal - but instead they sold Britain to the highest bidder, use it as their personal fiefdom and the people suffer the consequences

My blood boils over this . The UK has shafted itself . In 1994/5 I spent two years living and racing in the Netherlands with frequent trips to Belgium. Every one knew there were English cyclists living in the town , we did not have to leave after three months or show our I D ,or register at the town hall . I even had a part time job picking Strawberries . Currently I am awaiting a refund from HMRC Border force who chronically over charged me on a frame I imported from Belgium. There is no telephone number for their base in Coventry and all my correspondence is by registered mail . Welcome to more expense , red tape, bureaucracy . Tory government one hundred percent to blame along with Brexit propaganda media. Just like the Spanish Civil war if the people are divided and do not unite against the present government then the Tories will remain in power , disgusting.

Nothing to do with Brexit and what people voted fir
Everything to do with the government’s response to it. Get this and it’ll make a lot more sense.

I order stuff from the USA and Japan and have been doing so for many years, so nothing new for me. I contact sellers beforehand.

Border force are thieves and impossible to get hold of.

The EEA / Norway option would’ve been ideal in every single way, but the Tory scum sold us from one cesspit of Globalism to another.

Yes unfortunately there's VAT payable on your order, I've noticed some stores in Germany etc are not shipping to the UK at all!
It's all a bit 💩 really.
And yes it's due to the Govts response to Brexit, but then had there been no Brexit there would be no response and we'd be in a different situation right now.

In response to the OP, from memory, which is a bit vague as i only skimmed over it a while back, Ebay are charging their own fee on orders lower than the governments lower limit. Whether that is something a business has to do to cover themselves im not sure, and calling it vat.

Why are the EU imposing these taxes which only affect normal working people? Or is it revenge for the proles voting to leave their sacred super state ?

So, I found this in the small print on Ebay UK;

--------------------------------------------------

Items delivered to the UK

Value Added Tax (VAT) generally applies to purchases by UK consumers, and prices on eBay.co.uk are shown inclusive of VAT.

Starting 1 January 2021, eBay is required to collect VAT on certain orders delivered to UK addresses:

  • Orders up to £135 sent from outside the UK
  • Orders where the item is located in the UK, but the seller is not a UK seller
You'll see the VAT included in your order total at checkout, and you can view and download a tax invoice from the Order details page in your Purchase history.

On orders over £135 imported to the UK, the recipient may need to pay VAT as part of clearing the parcel through customs.

For more information about buying from overseas sellers, see our article about international purchases and postage.

Oh well, I've had a few bargains in the past from Ebay Germany, looks like I'll be saving some money......

The people voted for brexit and therefore the government to implement it. This is simply a consequence of the vote, like it or not, it is what it is. Yes, we could have had other deals that could have had different consequences, but we don't, and as a result, higher tariffs, more red tape etc etc.
