I hit a speed bump tonight at 20mph no more and there was a massive bang and a clang of metal.
I went back and found what looks like a sheered piece of spring? I've check the car over and the shocks seem fine, no damage to the underside of the car.

Any ideas please!!!???

The cars a MK3 Ford Mondeo ST TDCI

Of my sad face at 12:45??? Here go mate...

The car looks fine, ive bounced on every corner and can't see or hear anything!

oh thats rather small and shiny
possibly consider that it may not be your car at all
im far from an expert though

Looks like the last part coil of a spring to me..

Need the car jacked up to check both rear springs imo

My 1st thought was springs. It was from the front end as the wheels hit the speed bump. I've pull and bounce on all corners of the car but nothing seems loose??? The bang was definatly this letting go but where from???

The coil end usually sits in a cup so you wouldn't necessarily notice anything missing. You probably need to get a new spring but the garage will confirm.

Thats definately one end of a spring, and you should get it replaced.

Had similar on my Ka - 'cept both springs, though probably not from a single speedbar. Didn't notice at the time, and no bits fell out. Everything seemed normal except occasionally here would be a slight clonk from he front suspension when on full lock and a change in slope (turning onto our drive).

Main dealer said not safe to drive, so spoke to my tame mechanic, who agreed. I'd get it checked ASAP becase:

  • one corner of your car is sitting lower than the other
one spring now has a sharp edge, not the finished end you have in your hand
if the other side has snapped, but not ejected it, when will it do it and what will get damaged as a result. Your rear tyre or the car behind you?

Yup, that's the tail of a coil spring. I had one snap on my Merc Vito a few months back. The spring pan is a bad design on the Vito and the spring popped out causing the van to swerve violently toward the centre of the road. The sharp broken spring then slashed the tyre which exploded all over the road and ripped the brake pipe off, tore out the wheel arch liner, damaged the wing and broke the bumper. All this took place at 60mph so I was quite lucky.
Lesson- check condition of springs more often.
