Reading in another thread about re using rear gear cables for the front derailleur (something I also do, including brake cables), I thought it would be good to compile some of the hacks and tricks from the very experienced forum members.
There's a similar thread here, also good but more for art/non bike stuff.
A few I can think of:
-2 old tubes connected are a great sling to pull my kids when tired. Right distance, right amount of flex. One side attaches to my saddle, the other to their stem.
-shortened old brake cables also work as canti straddle cables
-spoke magnets from old cyclo computers hold my notes in the fridge. Attached to a spoke, help to remove bearings when overhauling a hub.
-old grips get a second life in my bar ends. They usually have the same diameter, and the grips avoid scuffs and the cold feel in winter
-alcohol wipes (the ones you get in restaurants after eating seafood) are decent at cleaning your hands after an emergency repair
-spacers from old v brake pads are great mudguard or rack fixings
-hotel shower caps are great to protect the saddle when parking in the rain
