Ungrateful Bar**ards.

I hope no-one here is taking this too seriously.

I worked in a bike shop as soon as I could work to buy better bikes, one of which (my Dyna Tech Roadbike I still have) and appreciate the effort my parents went to to get me the Shogun.

I just know that many will have suffered disapointment from well meaning intentions. I have seen enough 5'5" kids in the shop I used to work in leading mum and dad to the 16" Trek 820 or whatever and the parents buying a 23" Raleigh Activator, "he'll grow into it".

My first proper bike was a second hand Dawes Dalesman 5 speed road bike. Given to me by my uncle. Despite being 12 years old and the bike being far to big for me the first proper ride was a 50 mile epic with a mate during the summer holidays. Loved that bike, we had some real adventures. My first new bike was also my first mtb, a Trek 930 which soon got me hooked.

No nightmare stories here - Quite the opposite, IMO.

I had a couple of used bikes & then my parents saved liked crazy to buy me a Grifter.

I rode it everywhere for years. It ended up looking very scruffy, but it had a busy life.

I would never have deliberately abused it/ tried to break it because I knew how my parents struggled to buy it And anyway, I lurved it. But I guess I was lucky - My parents decided to invest in something useful, rather than some shonky old man's roadster.

The next one was a Raleigh Ultra Burner. Awesome kit on a very average frame. I paid about 80% of it, which took me forever to save up delivering newspapers. My parents helped with the rest for Xmas & birthday. Again, they found the money & resisted the urge to suggest a cheaper BSO.

Thanks, folks!
:D

In 1991, after my mate got a 1990 Fire Mountain (new!!) I pestered my parents for a 'real' moutain bike. I think they could see I was serious and when a 1989 Muddy Fox Courier came up for sale second hand at Mum's work she gave me the seller's number and Dad and I went to look. They agreed to pay half and the rest I would would earn and pay back. It took a while but was worth it.

I loved the Muddy Fox and rode it for miles and miles (and crashed a few times too!). Sadly I grew too big for the Muddy Fox so it sat in the shed from the mid-1990s onwards. Recently though baj has given it a home. :D
